Frequently Asked Questions

What are the biggest differences between ACA/Obamacare, Employer Plans, and Private Insurance?

1. ACA/Obamacare offers comprehensive medical coverage without the possibility of being denied due to pre-existing conditions. It becomes highly affordable when coupled with government subsidies on monthly premiums; however, without this discount, its costs can outweigh those of many other plans on the market.

2. While employer-provided plans are exceptional for individual employees, the addition of family members—such as spouses or children—can significantly increase premiums. This disparity arises because employers often subsidize their employees’ benefits, leaving family members to bear the full cost of inclusion in the plan.

3. Private insurance, being health-dependent, involves an application process where eligibility is determined based on health status. If you are in good health, you can qualify for preferred rates, making private insurance more affordable than many plans while offering superior coverage.

Preferred Provider Organization (PPO):

PPO plans offer more flexibility in choosing healthcare providers. You can typically visit any doctor or specialist without needing a referral, whether they are in-network or out-of-network.

In-network providers have negotiated rates with the insurance company, resulting in lower out-of-pocket costs for services. Out-of-network providers may also be covered, but at a higher cost to you.

PPO plans usually do not require you to select a primary care physician (PCP), and you can see specialists without a referral.

Health Maintenance Organization (HMO):

HMO plans typically require you to choose a primary care physician (PCP) from within the network. Your PCP manages your healthcare needs and provides referrals to specialists within the network when necessary.

In most cases, HMO plans do not cover out-of-network care, except in emergencies.

HMO plans often have lower premiums and out-of-pocket costs compared to PPO plans, but they offer less flexibility in choosing healthcare providers.

Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO):

EPO plans are like HMO plans in that they typically do not cover out-of-network care, except in emergencies.

However, EPO plans do not usually require you to select a primary care physician (PCP), and you can see specialists without referrals if they are within the network.
